Scene and Heard Gay D. D. Back In The Gay Getting Personal

On The Box Confessional Behind The Scene Downtown

SCENE AND HEARD

ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS, WE PRINT.

I’ve always thought of myself as a gay man in a woman’s body. Well, a very thin woman’s body…” said Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice), showing off her waist from the stage of Hiro Ballroom where she made a special appearance on Sunday night. In town for Fashion Week and slew of Spice Girls shows, the A-list celeb spiced up the lives of gay fans as she mingled (albeit with some enormous body guards) and even danced to a few Madonna songs, while DJ Honey Dijon threw the crowd some pop gems. Now, if only we could have had a thin David Beckham on the dance floor—shirtless!

Continuing our runway catwalk, we hit up the Marco Hall fashion show at HK on Monday. In his stellar “Disco-Diva-meets-Bohemian-Beauty” themed production, models including Andre J, Janté and Amanda Lepore worked some hot, beachy looks of flowy garments, bold prints and flared bell-bottoms. Adding to Hall’s majesty were makeup by Jewrel, hair by Issac and fantastic visuals by Pepe Villegas.

We jaunted over to the Project Runway fashion show in the tents at Bryant Park on Friday morning. Not only were there collections from the five remaining contestants (only three of which will be aired during the February 20 finale), but it was like a reality TV bomb had exploded in that tent. Former contestants mixed and mingled while waiting for Chris March, Christian Siriano, Rami Kashou, Jillian Lewis and Sweet P to march their models down the Runway runway. Jack Mackenroth arrived with his boyfriend, Dale Levitski, from Top Chef; debut season winner Jay McCarroll arrived with Season Two’s Nick Verreos; and PR2 contestant Daniel Vosovic arrived with fellow alum Kara Janx. Last season’s winner, Jeffrey Sebelia, was in attendance, but the show’s most infamous villain, Santino Rice, was a no show.

A nice surprise during March’s collection was Bianca Golden, the bald baddie from the most recent “cycle” of America’s Next Top Model, kicking off his line. Former Top Model winner Danielle Evans also walked for March, while another former winner, Jaslene Gonzalez, strutted her stuff in an awesome black gown by Lewis. Judges from other Bravo shows also turned out for the big occasion. Bravo VP and total dreamboat Andy Cohen (Andy, call us!) greeted Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi, and then Ted Allen introduced her to his boyfriend. Tyson Beckford and Niki Taylor, hosts of Make Me a Supermodel, sat right next to Heidi Klum (in jeans, for shame!), Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and guest judge Victoria Beckham (there she is again). We know what sitting next to Bedford and Taylor feels like, because we were in the front row with them on Monday morning to watch the male contestants (including our reality TV boyfriend Ronnie Kroell) walk in the R. Scott French show. If you look closely at the episode, you can even spot us trying to catch a glimpse at the judges’ scorecards!

We give high scores to Michael Holland and Karen Mack, whose hilarious Hole-O-Matic show we caught Saturday night at The Duplex. Like an even funnier version of Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer’s middle-school assembly sketch from SNL, the award-winning duo strung together dozens of cheesy musical gems culled largely from the ’70s and ’80s, giving them names like “Modern Love is a Battlefield” and “Shock the Maniac.” We’re can’t imagine where they got the drugs that allowed the genius splicing of Howard Jones with snippets of Blondie’s “Rapture” rap and the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” but we know we liked it.

It’s also hard to imagine—especially being the boozehounds we are—just 40-odd years ago it was actually illegal for bars in New York City to serve gays drinks! Fortunately, brave protesters of the Mattachine Society staged an historic, pre-Stonewall “sip-in” in 1966 at Julius that helped change all that. In honor of the civil rights stand, John Cameron Mitchell and PJ DeBoy revived the festive atmosphere at the historic West Village bar last Thursday in a super-packed, super-fun event of togetherness and spontaneity. Joining in the revelry: Neil Patrick Harris, Justin Bond, Jake Shears, DJ Amber Martin (who spun), Paul Dawson, Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear, Randy Jones, Joe Kovacs and Madame, Justin Ocean, Michael Musto, half the staff of Out Magazine, singer Bitch, Peter Stickles and more. Even original Mattachine members made an appearance and addressed the crowd, which was a special moment indeed.

Afterward at Marie’s Crisis we witnessed the bitter pianist tell Randy Jones and Madame they had to leave for stealing his spotlight. It was astonishing, if only because one of the “people” in the group was a freaking puppet. It was easily the campiest thing we’ve seen all year! If only Posh had been there to throw out, too. N
