Scene and Heard Gay D. D. Back In The Gay Getting Personal

On The Box Confessional Behind The Scene Downtown

SCENE AND HEARD

ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS, WE PRINT.

Get ready boys—a new party space is set to open on a prominent strip in Chelsea. They’re trying to keep the details mum right now, but by the end of the month an old favorite is going to bring you something totally new. Have your combination locks ready….
Maybe it was the first warm day of the year, but Saturday night was just crazy. Blowoff at the Highline Ballroom continued to draw all the daddies and, thanks to a concert beforehand that ran over, had them lined up all the way down 16th St practically to Ninth Ave. While some grumbled, everyone was happy once they got inside and heard D.C. DJs Bob Mould and Richard Morel turning it out like no one else in New York.

Stonewall was bursting with the crowd for the New York Boys of Leather’s Boy Auction (the venue is also packing them in on Wednesdays for their Stonewall Sensation contest). The Boiler Room was likewise full of cute boys looking for cheap drinks, jukebox jams and video machines. There was even a line at Family, where inside, Michael “Formika” Jones decried the lack of creativity for the party’s “unique talent contest.” If every night is like this once it warms up, it’s going to be a very long spring.

However, earlier in the week the weather wasn’t nearly as pleasant. Despite the drizzle and getting lost in the winding, cavernous hallway, we found Pink—the new home to the cheese-tastic and long-running Pop Rocks! The place was abuzz with dancing fiends and twinkalicious go-gos as new hosts Amanda Lepore and Formika celebrated DJ Chip Duckett’s birthday. The open Blat vodka bar kicked off the night and the Twinkie Cake (as in a twink on the cake, not the Hostess treat) kicked off a sugar high we haven’t seen since our eighth grade dance. Even boyfriends were cast aside at the sound of “MMMBop”...we know all too well.

A girl can never have too many vibrators—especially free ones—and since they were prizes at Lips’ Bitchy Bingo, we were game. After feasting on diva (we had the Sherry Vine starter and Lady Bunny entrée, natch) we manned our boards while petite firecracker Ginger Snaps manned the mic, keeping the crowd in stitches and interjecting the ball call with crude jokes and rude commentary on unsuspecting tourists. The wigs really hit the fan when fellow firebrand Yvonne joined the fray and the two read each other something fierce and funny between performances. And while we didn’t score a new toy (damn those breeder girls!), dragstress Skyla Versai kept us happy with VIP drinks filled to the brim.

Still craving the viva glam, we hit up Barracuda in time for Shasta Cola’s packed jam, where she knocked out the crowd with a Janis Joplin number as bar babes J.R. and Mario knocked us out even further.

If you missed promoter Paul Short manning the door at Snaxx this weekend, it’s because he was throwing one of his Spit parties. No, it wasn’t at Uncle Ming’s, the party’s usually haunt on Avenue B; it was at a new venue called Woofs! You haven’t heard of it? Well, that’s because it’s in Madison, Wisconsin! Yes, the Midwest got a taste of a wild New York party thanks to Short and DJ Mike Grimes. “They started filling it up by 9:00,” Short says, safe at home in Queens. “The crowd was mostly made up of hot chicks, drunken buttoned-up college boys, hardcore dykes, big burly bears and fetishists of every variety. It was the most diverse crowd of white people I’ve ever seen!”

Finally, thanks to everyone for their cards and flowers wishing our foot a speedy recovery after a table landed on it at Splash two weeks ago. DJ Micky Friedmann, who accidentally caused the table to topple, emailed to apologized for any pain we had to endure and to say that if he’d been aware of the injury, he would have stopped to say sorry on the spot. Apology accepted, Micky, and thanks for being a class act. Thank god we don’t have to begin another nightlife blood feud, because we can hardly remember half of the ones we already started!
