Scene and Heard Gay D. D. Back In The Gay Getting Personal

On The Box Confessional Behind The Scene Downtown

SCENE AND HEARD

ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS, WE PRINT.

It’s hard to party after the gay bomb drops,” quipped a character on Gossip Girl’s legendary coming out episode. Personally, we’ve always found the gay bomb to be cause for celebration—and Gossip Girl itself is just about the best Monday night party evah! Not since ‘90s Melrose Place has Monday been so delicious, and let’s face it—we’ve been known to enjoy gossip ourselves just a bit. Between Nate’s dreaminess, Blair’s bitchiness and Eric’s coming out and sleeping with his sister’s-boyfriend’s-sister’s boyfriend (got that?), we couldn’t be more glued to our TVs (or computer screens). And hooray—the CW has renewed the series for a new, extra-long season—starting at the end of summer with episodes in the Hamptons—we’ll have plenty of dish to enjoy.

Showing no signs of aging was the cast of thousands at the 18th annual Night of a Thousand Stevies, which set up shop in the Highline Ballroom last Friday to celebrate Stevie Nicks in all her glory. Producers Chi Chi Valenti and Hattie Hathaway kept the acts flowing until 3am. Stand out moments include Linda James getting so messy they had to mop up after her set, Adam Joseph bringing the house down with his version of “Landslide,” Justin Bond’s “Nightbird” with his emaciated naked back up singers and Our Lady J on keyboards, Machine Dazzle wearing a magnificent head piece and Johnny Darling and the Post Modern Horror doing a spoken-word piece about Christine McVie. The night was dedicated to founding performer and New York gay legend Dean Johnson who passed away last year, and Poison Eve honored him with a rendition of “Sit on My Face, Stevie Nicks.” Dean would have been proud.

On Friday we took a swig and headed over to Zipper Factory as Bulldog Gin held a Nightlife Icons party celebrating its six “Brazen Breed” print ad spokesmodels, the downtown “it” personalities Daniel Nardicio, Amanda LePore, Rainblo, Ladyfag, Cazwell and Xander. Many of them performed, including Cazwell with new release “I’ve Seen Beyoncé in Burger King” and director Francis Legge premiering his new, racy YouTube- and Logo-banned video “East Village Cocksucker” featuring Rainblo and Ladyfag. The evening also served as a benefit for Stonewall Community Foundation’s Quarter Share, a great way for young gay professionals to invest in philanthropic donations. DJs Gant Johnson and David Serrano spun in the lower level lounge with an open Bulldog Gin bar from 11pm to midnight.

We had no idea that at the launch party for Eschelon International, the new matchmaking service for gay men started by Lowell Gannon, we would meet a pair of fabulous straight people! As huge reality fans, we were introduced to Survivor winners and real-life couple Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca. After telling Jenna where she could find a good drag show, we talked to the adorable Ethan about his organization Grassroots Soccer, which uses the sport to help spread AIDS education here and in Africa. He’s planning on dribbling a soccer ball from Boston to Washington, D.C. starting in August to raise awareness. He even asked us to help him kick it for a spell when he’s near New York. Well, Ethan, we suck at soccer but we’re flattered—give us any chance to show off our ball-handling skills and we’ll take it!

Usually when you say a party is dead, it’s not a compliment, but the opposite is true for Zombie-A-Go-Go at Piano’s, which was actually hopping with dead people. The party kicked off its new monthly residency with makeup artists, face painters and a lively musical mix tinged with ’80s pop and the live debut of electronic duo Snowman & Furball. Projected movie scenes featured everyone from Freddy to Michael Myers, helping to distract us from the terror of Monday’s inevitable arrival. But then again, Gossip Girl does make Monday’s arrival a whole lot sweeter. N
